PLATEAU STATE HITS HISTORIC N31.14 BILLION IGR IN 2024,SETS N52 BILLION TARGET FOR 2025

By Plateau Reporters, Jos

PSIRS Chairman: Plateau State’s IGR Hits New High, Urges Tax System Overhaul

Plateau State Generates Record-Breaking ₦31.14 Billion IGR in 2024

Jos, Nigeria – The Plateau State Board of Internal Revenue Service (PSIRS) has announced a significant milestone in the state’s revenue generation, recording a historic ₦31.14 billion in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) as of the close of business in 2024.

PSIRS Chairman Jim Pam Wayas confirmed this achievement while addressing journalists at the board’s conference hall in Jos on Friday. He noted that for the first time in Plateau State’s history, revenue collection had surpassed the ₦30 billion mark, marking a significant leap from previous years.

Steady Growth in Revenue Collection

Wayas highlighted the steady improvement in the state’s IGR over the past few years.

“WHEN THIS ADMINISTRATION STARTED IN 2023, I JOINED HALFWAY THROUGH THE YEAR, AND A LOT HAS HAPPENED SINCE THEN. IN 2022, TOTAL REVENUE GENERATED WAS ₦15.9 BILLION. BY THE END OF 2023, WE INCREASED IT TO ₦25.8 BILLION. HOWEVER, AS OF THE CLOSE OF 2024, WE RECORDED ₦31.14 BILLION IN REVENUE,” HE STATED.

Looking ahead, the Plateau State Government has set an ambitious ₦52 billion revenue target for 2025, signaling its commitment to further boosting internally generated revenue.

“WE NEED TO START 2025 ON A STRONG NOTE, AND WE ARE ON THE RIGHT PATH. IN JANUARY ALONE, WE COLLECTED ABOUT ₦3.3 BILLION, ONE OF THE HIGHEST AMOUNTS EVER COLLECTED IN A SINGLE MONTH. COMPARED TO JANUARY 2024, WHEN WE GENERATED ABOUT ₦1.6 BILLION, THIS REPRESENTS A MAJOR IMPROVEMENT,” WAYAS NOTED.

Challenges with Federal Allocation

The PSIRS chairman also addressed concerns about declining federal allocations to Plateau State, citing debts incurred in previous years as a key factor.

“MANY PEOPLE ARE ASKING ABOUT THE REVENUE BEING GENERATED INTERNALLY AND WHAT IS COMING FROM THE FEDERAL ALLOCATION. THE TRUTH IS THAT FEDERAL ALLOCATION HAS BEEN DECLINING DUE TO DEBTS, MANY OF WHICH WERE TAKEN WHEN THE EXCHANGE RATE WAS AROUND ₦440 TO $1. TODAY, THE EXCHANGE RATE HAS FLUCTUATED, SOMETIMES REACHING AS HIGH AS ₦2,000 TO $1,” HE EXPLAINED.

He further noted that the state’s subsidy allocation has been in the negative for the past six months, as federal deductions significantly reduce the actual amount Plateau State receives.

Expanding Revenue Sources

To counter these financial challenges, Wayas emphasized the need to broaden the state’s revenue base by identifying new sources and plugging loopholes in tax collection.

“WE ARE NOW EXPLORING OUR INTERNALLY GENERATED REVENUE (IGR) POTENTIAL, AND I MUST COMMEND GOVERNOR CALEB MUTFWANG FOR TAKING BOLD STEPS TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY. THE ENTIRE REVENUE SYSTEM IS UNDERGOING TRANSFORMATION, AND WE ARE IDENTIFYING UNTAPPED REVENUE SOURCES,” HE SAID.

He added that the PSIRS is strengthening collaboration with key stakeholders such as the Joint Tax Board, Tax Appeal Tribunal, and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to enhance seamless revenue collection.

As Plateau State sets its sights on achieving its ₦52 billion revenue target for 2025, efforts are being intensified to ensure sustainable economic growth and infrastructural development for its citizens.

NGAS NATION DEMANDS JUSTICE OVER THE DEMISE OF EX CGI PARADANG

By Plateau Reporters, Jos

The National Executive Council of Ngas Development Association (NDA) on behalf of the Expanded Exco, Ngas Elder’s Forum and Ngas sons and daughters globally has called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun and the DSS to fish out the alleged killers of a former Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nde David Shikfu Paradang.

The Ngas body is angered by the way the ex Immigration Boss was said to have been killed in the heart of Abuja, Federal Capital Territory.

It wondered how Nigerians will be able to sleep well and carry on with their legitimate way of life if people like the ex CGI can be easily killed in the Seat of Power.

The NDA frowned at the manner the news was announced and the contradictory news surrounding the death of the ex Immigration Boss but noted that it has confidence in the ability of the Nigeria Police and other Security Agencies to unravel the mystery and called on them to employ their professional experience and expertise to bring the perpetrators to Justice; and expeditiously too.

Finally, the NDA  demands that all Ngas sons and daughters to desist from making any posts and comments on the social media about this issue since the police and other security agencies are still carrying out investigations on the matter. Let’s desist from it forthwith in honour of our late father, brother and son’s memory.

May the soul of the deceased find rest.

It is with a heavy heart that I write to condole with the family of Nde David Shikfu Paradang, former Comptroller General (CG) of Nigeria Immigration. Nde Paradang was a father to all on the Plateau, a mentor, and a leader to reckon with. The news of his death came to me as a shock, as I was not expecting it at this time.

I condemn in strong terms the wicked and inhumane act perpetrated against a peaceful and cool-headed personality like Nde Paradang. My condolences go to the family, friends, political associates, and the entire Plateau State. May God comfort us and grant eternal rest to our beloved father.

GOC 3 DIVISION PLEDGES FAIRNESS IN TACKLING PLATEAU STATE’S SECURITY CHALLENGES DURING COURTESY VISIT TO GOVERNOR

By Plateau Reporters, Jos

In a significant gesture of collaboration for peace and security, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, the newly appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN (Comd OPSH), paid a courtesy call on the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang, at the Governor’s office in Little Rayfield, Jos on Tuesday 4 February 2025. During the visit, the GOC reaffirmed his commitment to a fair and just approach in addressing the state’s security challenges, aiming to foster a peaceful environment for all citizens.

In his address, Major General Oyinlola emphasized the necessity of maintaining and building upon the achievements of his predecessor in ensuring stability within the Joint Operations Area (JOA) of Plateau and its neighboring regions. “Our priority is not just to maintain the existing peace in the state but also to enhance it, ensuring that all parties involved feel secure and supported,” he stated.

The GOC’s remarks underscored a people-centric approach to security operations, which he defined as the combination of kinetic strategies—more traditional military engagements—and non-kinetic initiatives focusing on community engagement and dialogue. “The operations in Plateau State require a multi-faceted approach,” he added. “We must involve all stakeholders and ensure that their voices are heard in our quest for lasting peace.”

Governor Caleb Mutfwang while welcoming the GOC, expressed his appreciation for the GOC’s visit and pledged the full support of the state government to aid in his mission. “We consider you a critical partner in progress, and together we aspire to return Plateau State to its pre-crisis status, a land renowned as the true home of peace and tourism in Nigeria,” Mutfwang stated, underscoring the partnership between the military and the state government in addressing security concerns.

The governor also acknowledged the efforts of the immediate past GOC, attributing the peaceful Christmas celebration of 2024 to his dedicated interventions. “His contributions to peace and security were paramount in ensuring a harmonious festive season for our communities,” stated Mutfwang.

Highlighting the dual nature of the security challenges in the state, the governor noted the importance of employing both hard and soft approaches. “A multi-faceted strategy is essential to not only combat violence but also to promote understanding and cooperation among our communities,” he reiterated. Governor Mutfwang called on the citizens of Plateau State to embrace peace and work collectively towards a more secure future, reassuring them of the state government’s commitment to peaceful coexistence.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Deputy Governor of Plateau State, the Secretary to the State Government, honorable commissioners, and members of the Plateau State Executive Council, along with commanders and staff officers from the 3 Division and Operation SAFE HAVEN. The occasion was marked by the presentation of souvenirs and a group photograph, commemorating the collaborative spirit between the military and the state government.

Major General Oyinlola’s visit to Governor Mutfwang signals a renewed commitment to peace and security in Plateau State. With the GOC’s assurance of fairness and the governor’s support, there is hope for a more secure and harmonious Plateau, where the communities can collectively thrive and restore their historic legacy as a beacon of peace and tourism in Nigeria. As both leaders echoed the need for unity and proactive measures, the future looks promising for the people of Plateau State.
